Tralee has been
awarded a Silver Medal with further progress recorded in the
2008 National Tidy Towns Competition, the results of which were
announced on Monday night
(Sept 8) at a televised ceremony in Dublin. Tralee scored 273
marks, eight behind the gold medal winners Carlow in the large
urban area category. The Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Ted Fitzgerald
has congratulated Cllr. Johnnie Wall and the Towards a Better
Tralee team on the performance saying it was only a matter
time when the town would strike gold. An enormous effort was put
in during 2008 but the full fruits of these labours would not be
reflected until next year, he said.
Cllr. Johnnie Wall also thanked the various groups involved in
the Towards a Better Tralee effort and said that it had to
be sustained. More groups had become involved in 2008 and he
pointed to the Pikeman Flower Bed in Denny Street, the flower
box initiative along the main streets, the Tidy Tralee
initiative at St. Anne's Bungalows and the planting outside Rath
Cemetery. He also praised the Council staff, FÁS CE teams,
Tralee Chamber, Breanainn Employment Services and community
groups like those in Manor Village, Ballinorig, Balloonagh
Estate, Rath
Óraigh, Knockmoyle and other Tidy Tralee members for their
efforts. The detailed report has yet to be received but the
committee had to remain focussed, he said.
Meanwhile, Westport won the overall award for the third time and
Kenmare won the small town category.
