Work has commenced (Nov 27) on the
construction of the 1.5km Nature Walk and Cycle Way along the
River Lee from the Ballyard Road to Ballymullen. Portions of the
walk had already been completed at the rear of the new Fels
Point Hotel and Omniplex as part the ‘planning gain’ on these
developments and the new contract being undertaken by Pembroke
Construction, will complete the walk and cycle way as far as Ballymullen. It is hoped to complete the section from Ballyard
to the entrance to the Woodlands Caravan Park prior to
Christmas.
The €570,000 Contract with Pembro
ke
Construction was signed on November 19th by the Mayor of Tralee
Cllr. Miriam McGillicuddy and Town Manager Michael McMahon on
behalf of Tralee Town Council and by Tony Griffin on behalf of
Pembroke Construction. The Nature Way has been a long term
objective of the Town Council who last year approved Part 8
Planning for the project.

The Nature Way is 3 metres wide and includes both embankment and
raised sections and has full accessibility. Seating, fishing
stands and nature information panels will also be provided along
the route. It begins just west of the Aqua Dome and (the current
phase) ends at the new Castlemorris Park in Ballymullen. The
Contract Consultants are Kane Crowe Kavanagh, Quantity Surveyors
and Malachy Walsh & Partners, Consulting Engineers.
The project has received grant support totalling €416,640 from
the Tourism Infrastructure Fund of the new National Development
Plan administered by Fáilte Ireland who were represented by
North Kerry Manager Ms. Martina Canty at the signing ceremony.
The balance of funding for the project is being provided by
Tralee Town Council from its amenity levy fund.
The next phase will involve the
extension of the walk and cycle way by Kerry County Council
eastwards from Ballymullen to Ballyseedy Wood.
