Rahoonane Flower Wall

Tralee marked National Volunteer
Day (September 26) with the planting of a 100 metre long flower
wall at Rahoonane Estate along the Killeen Road. Over 50
volunteers joined in the 6 hour operation which was led by
residents of Rahoonane and Shanakill estates. Some 350 plants of
different varieties of ivy, clematis, fuchsia, formium and
hydrangea were provided by Tralee Town Council and Town Gardener
Brendan Enright directed the operation from early morning.
The operation had been planned to
last 8 hours but such was the support forthcoming that the bulk
of the work was completed by 1pm. After lunch, served in the
Community Centre, local children joined in the bulb planting
operation which will be continued by the Towards a Better Tralee/FÁS
CE Team. Among the groups who assisted in the volunteer effort
were St. John of God, Tralee CDP, FAS CE Team, Tralee Town
Council Environment section, Rahoonane Community Centre, Kerry
Volunteer Centre and Garda Community Service Officers. The local
co-ordinator was Jerry Riordan, Chairman, Shanakill/Rahoonae
Estate Management Committee, who was delighted with the progress
made in such a short time. Jerry thanked Harry and Catherine
Hynes, Quick Pick Shanakill, Lee Strand, Garryowen Transport,
Kevin Barry’s Rock Street and Towards a Better Tralee who
provided food and beverages to the volunteers.
The Deputy Mayor of Tralee Cllr.
Kieran Moriarty was on hand to offer his support and
encouragement. “When the flower wall is in full bloom the area
will be envy of the rest of Tralee. Respect for nature cultured
by the families of the area will go along way to improving and
uniting this community”.
Tralee Town Clerk Mike Scannell
also praised the community for their endeavour. He said it was
the latest in a series of activities by a vibrant community.
