Following the recent Local Elections, the twelve new Tralee Town
Councillors took up their offices at the AGM in Tralee Town Hall
on June 15. Following the roll call by Town Clerk Michael
Scannell and tributes to outgoing Mayor Cllr. Ted Fitzgerald,
the election for the new Mayor took place. Cllr. Terry
O'Brien (Lab) was proposed by party colleague Cllr. Arthur J.
Spring (Lab) and seconded by Cllr. Pat Hussey (FG). Cllr. Cathal
Foley (SF) was proposed by Toireasa Ferris (SF) and seconded by
Cllr. Sam Locke (Ind). Cllr. O'Brien was elected by 9 votes to
3. In the election for Deputy Mayor newly elected Councillor
Mairead Fernane (FG) defeated Cllr. Sam Locke again by 9 votes
to 3. Cllr. O'Brien and Cllr. Fernane were warmly
congratulated by all their council colleagues.
This is the third occasion that
Cllr. O'Brien has been elected Mayor of Tralee who put the
regeneration of the Mitchel's area and continuing renewal of the
town centre at the top of his agenda.
