Following the recent Local Elections, the twelve new Tralee Town Councillors took up their offices at the AGM in Tralee Town Hall on June 15. Following the roll call by Town Clerk Michael Scannell and tributes to outgoing Mayor Cllr. Ted Fitzgerald, the election for the new Mayor took place.  Cllr. Terry O'Brien (Lab) was proposed by party colleague Cllr. Arthur J. Spring (Lab) and seconded by Cllr. Pat Hussey (FG). Cllr. Cathal Foley (SF) was proposed by Toireasa Ferris (SF) and seconded by Cllr. Sam Locke (Ind). Cllr. O'Brien was elected by 9 votes to 3. In the election for Deputy Mayor newly elected Councillor Mairead Fernane (FG) defeated Cllr. Sam Locke again by 9 votes to 3.  Cllr. O'Brien and Cllr. Fernane were warmly congratulated by all their council colleagues.

This is the third occasion that Cllr. O'Brien has been elected Mayor of Tralee who put the regeneration of the Mitchel's area and continuing renewal of the town centre at the top of his agenda.
