Kerry County Museum Wins 2009 Museum of the Year

The Kerry County Museum in Tralee has been named the 2009 Irish Museum of the Year. The announcement was made at the annual awards ceremony in Iveagh House, Dublin jointly hosted by the Heritage Council and the Northern Ireland Museums Council (May 18).  The award has been widely welcomed.

The Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Ted Fitzgerald, who chaired the Town Council Sub-Committee who established the Museum in 1992, was full of praise for Helen O'Carroll and her staff. "We have been close to winning before but now we've achieved the ultimate award.  The new exhibitions and out-reach programme have been valuable additions to what is an excellent heritage  facility.  Congratulations to all the staff."

Town Clerk Michael Scannell also congratulated the Museum staff: "To Helen, Sandra, Claudia, Griffin, Alice, Ann & Eoin well done, your accolade is well deserved."

Commenting on the Kerry Museum, chief executive of the Heritage Council Michael Starrett said it was “a vibrant cultural resource for the Kerry community and the island as a whole.  “Its in-depth and engaging exhibitions programme, together with its education and community programme, are testaments to the hard work and commitment of the staff at this museum.”

The Kerry County Museum at the Ashe Memorial was developed by Tralee Town Council over the period 1989-92. It has attracted over 1.2m visitors over 15 years and was listed among Europe's top 10 new museums in 1994. The museum has won several accolades for its international exhibitions in the past but this is the first time it has been named as the overall Irish Museum of the Year.
