The first phase of the ambitious Mitchel’s Area Regeneration Programme has commenced with the signing of the €5.7m contract with M. Fitzgibbon Builders Ltd. of Ennis, Co. Clare for the construction of 42 housing units with caretaker and ancillary facilities on the site of the former Moyderwell Mercy Secondary School at Dean’s Lane.

The new development, designed by the National Building Agency for Tralee Town Council, will be a mixture of one and two bedroom units for elderly residents arranged around a secure courtyard and will incorporate an energy efficient system of wood chip/pellet burners as apart of a District Central Heating system.

It is intended that the existing residents of the nearby St Patrick’s Bungalows will be re-housed in the new development and the existing St Patricks Bungalows then demolished as part of re-generation programme.

The Contract for the new housing scheme was signed on behalf of the Town Council by the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr. Miriam McGillicuddy and Town Clerk, Michael Scannell. Mr. Martin Fitzgibbon and Ms. Susan Fitzgibbon signed on behalf of M. Fitzgibbon Builders. Ms. Angela Walsh represented the Mitchel’s Regeneration Area Steering Committee.

This is Tralee Town Council’s first development with M. Fitzgibbon Builders and it also their first major project in Tralee. They have carried out extensive building projects in the Mid-West region for both local authorities and private developers.
