Mayor Honours Museum Staff                             The Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Terry O'Brien and members of the council hosted a Civic Reception for Museum Manager Helen O' Carroll and staff of the Kerry County Museum in Tralee Town Hall on Thursday February 4th. It was in recognition of the Museum's achievement in  winning the 2009 Museum of the Year. Warm tributes were paid to Helen and museum staff by the Mayor, Town Clerk, Michael Scannell and Mr. Eamon Langford who represented the board of the National Museum at the ceremony.  [More]

Town Council Approves Budget for 2010            Tralee Town Council has  approved an annual budget of €19,138,104 for 2010 on Jan 12th last. It is 8% less than that adopted by members for 2009 prior to the introduction of cost savings during the year. There has been no increase in the Commercial Rate, parking, refuse or commercial water charges.  In his Manager’s Report to members, Mr. Michael McMahon, stated that the level of estimated income in the budget is the minimum required to ensure that the level of service provision being provided by the Council is not compromised and the improvements that have been achieved in the past number of years can be sustained. The Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Terry O'Brien has extended Christmas Greetings to the people of Tralee at home and abroad as well as Town Council staff. "2009 was a challenging year for everybody but it was also a memorable year for Tralee with the golden jubilee of the Rose of Tralee Festival, success in the Museum of the Year and Tidy Towns competition, completion of Phase 1 of the Mitchel's Regeneration, celebration of the Christie Hennessy legacy  and yet another All-Ireland Football victory for Kerry. Enjoy a peaceful and blessed Christmas and let's work together for an even better Tralee in 2010."

Tralee Receives its Silver Medal
The Towards a Better Tralee Committee has been presented with its Silver Medal and Certificate following another impressive performance in the National Tidy Towns Competition.  The prizes for 2009 were presented to members of the Committee by Mr. Michael Finneran (right), Junior Minister at the Department of the Environment, at a reception hosted by Failte Ireland South West in Killarney on December 14th last. Preparations for 2010 have already begun and  Towards a Better Tralee  will outline its programme early in the New Year.

Höchst to Continue Backing of Christmas Market The German town of Frankfurt-Höchst is to continue its backing of the Tralee Christmas Market next year. Delegation leader Thomas Meder has confirmed that the group will be back in Kerry in 2010 to support an expanded market in the town centre.  He suggested that Germans living in Kerry be invited to get involved next year. “We had numerous approaches from Germans domiciled in Kerry offering their support for next year. These together with your local Kerry traders and craftspeople can put on a superb show,” he said. [More]
 

Mayor Officially Opens Christmas Market           The Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Terry O'Brien has officially opened the German style Christmas Market in The Square and turned on the festive lights in the town centre.  It was the Mayor's first function since his return to official duties following a long illness. The market had been set up earlier on Friday in The Square and a large crowd assembled for the opening ceremony. The Mayor extended a warm welcome to Thomas Meder and the delegation from Frankfurt and Irish traders attending the German-style market.  [More]

Educate Together Student Group Visit Town Hall                                                                   The new student council of the Tralee Educate Together School in Killeen visited the Town Hall on November 11 and were greeted by the Deputy Mayor Cllr, Mairead Fernane. They were briefed on the operation of the Council by Town Clerk Michael Scannell and on the history of Tralee and Tidy Towns initiatives by Development Officer John Griffin. Large Gathering for Unveiling of Christie Hennessy Sculpture                                                                                      Over a thousand people gathered in Tralee Town Square on Saturday October 31st for the unveiling of a life-size sculpture of the famous Tralee-born singer/songwriter Christie Hennessy (1945-2007) by his friend Christy Moore and Christie’s widow Gill Hennessy Ross. Christie’s music filled the air as the crowd congregated.  The large gathering included family and friends from Tralee and the UK, celebrities, politicians, a large press corps, fans from all over Ireland and those who had appreciated Christie’s music.  [More]

 

National Energy Conservation Award for Tobar Naofa Development 
Tralee Town Council has won the 2009 Energy Conservation Award for its new Tobar Naofa housing development at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards which were held in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin. The award, presented by Minister John Gormley, was for the centralized wood chip district heating system which was installed in Tobar Naofa, the first phase of the ambitious Mitchel’s-Boherbee Community Regeneration Project.  .... Photographic Treasure Trove Launched            A fascinating book featuring 240 photographs of Tralee and Co. Kerry, many of them hitherto unpublished, has been launched at the Institute of Technology, Tralee(Oct 29). The book entitled “EYEWITNESS “, published by the Collins Press, showcases the photography of Tralee based photographers Padraig Kennelly and his late wife Joan. Padraig and Joan were co-founders of the Kerry's Eye newspaper in 1974. The beautifully presented book, which is sure to become a collector’s item... [More]  

Christy Moore to Unveil Christie Hennessy Sculpture this Saturday                                                                        Singer Christy Moore will join other celebrities, members of the Hennessy and Ross families and members of Tralee Town Council in The Square, Tralee this Saturday (at 11 am)   for the unveiling of a life-size bronze sculpture of the Tralee’s famous son, the singer/songwriter Christie Hennessy (1945- 2007) Over the past few days stone masons and Town Council operatives have been putting the final touches to the Portland stone plinth where the memorial will sit and late last evening (Oct 28) the bronze masterpiece was finally fitted into position. Tralee to host German Style Christmas Market   In association with its city partners in Frankfurt, Tralee Town Council is planning a German style Christmas Market  in the town centre over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, December 5/6. Denny Family Visit Tralee                         Descendants of the Denny family who governed Tralee for almost 300 years returned to the town this week for the launch of the new book on the history of Tralee by historian Gerald O’Carroll. Led by Sir  Anthony Denny, the group paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Fernane at Tralee Town Hall and presented the Council with a copy of a watercolour of Tralee Castle in 1804. He was accompanied by Lady Catherine Denny, their son Tom and daughter-in-law Benita.

Launch of New History of Tralee                         In what promises to be a valuable addition to the knowledge of the history of Tralee, a new book entitled The History of Tralee, Its Charter and Governance by Tralee historian Gerald O’Carroll will be officially launched this Tuesday, October 20th by  Dr. Angus Mitchell, of the University of Limerick. Museum's Halloween Treat                            Kerry County Museum will host a Halloween special on Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31st next. Tralee Tidy Towns Awards Presented             The Deputy Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Mairéad Fernane has paid tribute to all those involved in the Tralee Tidy Towns effort.  “You just don’t talk about improving our town, you get down and do something about it” she said.   She was speaking at the annual Tidy Tralee Awards Ceremony which took place on September 28th in the Manor West Hotel.

Thousands Throng Tralee for Culture Night  4,988 dancers thronged Denny Street on Friday September 25th for a World Record Dancing Attempt. It was all part of the national Culture Night celebrations  which continued over the weekend. Free shows  organic cook-off, mime, basket weaving, movies, late night art, children’s theatre, music festival and steam threshing in Blennerville were all part of the weekend programme organised by Siamsa Tíre, Kerry County Museum and Samhlaíocht Chiarraí, supported by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Tralee Town Council and Kerry County Council.        [More]

Mitchel's-Boherbee Regeneration Project Continues                                                           A major step in the regeneration of the Mitchel's area of the town took place on Wednesday (Sept 23) with the signing of the contract for the demolition of 69 derelict housing units between Tralee Town Council and Griffin Brothers, Contractors. Tralee Wins Silver Medal and Increases Marks in Tidy Towns                                                      Tralee’s progress up the national Tidy Towns table continues with a further 7 mark increase for the town in 2009 over 2008 and a silver medal award in the large urban area category.  Tralee is now challenging Carlow for the gold medal in this category. Civic Welcome for Palatine Group                       The Deputy Mayor of Tralee Cllr. Mairead Fernane has accorded a civic welcome to the Palatine Association to mark the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Palatines in Ireland. Descendants of the Palatine families who settled in Ireland and German visitors from the Palatinate were greeted by the D/Mayor at the Town Hall on September 8. During their stay they also visited the Kerry County Museum and Blennerville Windmill with local organiser Christy Switzer.   [More]

Charmaine Wins Golden Jubilee Crown           The London Rose Charmaine Kenny, a twenty-six-year-old TCD economics scholar and budding entrepreneur who is originally from Athy, Co Kildare, has been crowned  the 50th International Rose of Tralee . The announcement was made at the packed Topaz festival dome in Tralee on Wednesday August 26th. Half-A-Million Viewers Watch Rose Retrospective                                                        Upwards of 500,000 TV viewers watched the hour long documentary on the history of the Rose of Tralee Festival on Monday night and viewing numbers for last evening's presentation of the first 18 Roses was set to double this.  The 50th Rose of Tralee Festival has exceeded all expectations with visitors attending and spending in the town well up according to Padraig McGillicuddy, Chairman of Holiday Tralee. even exceeded expectations.  The Golden Jubilee Rose is set to be selected at about 11.30pm tonight (Wed). Frankfurt Group Return to Warm Welcome    Tralee Town Council hosted a welcome reception on Monday afternoon for members of the Vereinsring Höchst, organisers of the Höchster Schlossfest, who are visiting Tralee this week for the Rose of Tralee Festival. The group led by their Chairman Thomas Meder had selected Tralee as its international partner for 2009 and are now working with the Town Council to expand the relationship.

Tralee Twins with Westlake, Ohio                     The sister city twinning of Tralee and Westlake, Ohio has been formalised during the official visit of Mayor Dennis Clough and his delegation to Tralee for the Rose of Tralee Festival.  The group were welcomed to Tralee Town Hall by D/Mayor Mairead Fernane and fellow Council members on Saturday afternoon (Aug 22). Rose Memorial Arrives in Tralee                    What is set to become one of Ireland’s best known and most photographed sculptures has arrived in Tralee and was officially unveiled on Monday August 24th. The Rose of Tralee by renowned Irish sculptor Jeanne Rynhart will commemorate the original Rose of Tralee, Mary O’Connor, and her loved one and composer of the famous ballad, William Pembroke Mulchinock. Bridget Bids Farewell                                      Bridget Griffin who has fronted the reception desk in Tralee Town Hall for the past 18 years retired on Monday August 10th.  Town Clerk Mike Scannell presented Bridget with a bouquet of flowers and there were generous tributes from fellow staff members. Council colleagues will host a party for Bridget and fellow retiree Margaret Savage this Friday evening.

Deputy Mayor Opens Féile na mBláth               The 2009 Féile na mBláth Garden Festival has been officially opened by Cllr. Mairéad Fernane, Deputy Mayor of Tralee (June 19). In her first official function since election, Cllr. Fernane thanked all those involved in the organisation of the event including chairman Cllr. Johnnie Wall and sponsors. She later presented prizes in the Children's Art Competition and launched the Tralee Anti-Gum Litter Project. Tralee Elects New Mayor                                                     Following the recent Local Elections, the twelve new Tralee Town Councillors took up their offices at the AGM in Tralee Town Hall on June 15. After 17 counts which extended into Sunday afternoon (June 7) the people of Tralee have chosen the 12 Councillors that will represent them for the next five years on Tralee Town Council. Tralee: Our Town Expo                                          Tralee: Our Town Exhibition was officially opened by the Mayor of Tralee on April 24th last. The 2-day exhibition by local voluntary, community, sporting and cultural organisations together with presentations on entrepreneurship and further education in the Brandon Conference Centre was regarded as a great success. It is hoped to hold a similar but expanded event in 2010.

First Snow in Tralee
