Civic Reception for
Fr. Dan

Tralee Town Council hosted a civic reception on August 5th
for Msgr. Dan O’Riordan, the former parish priest of St. John’s,
in recognition of his outstanding service to the town since
1996. Mayor Ted Fitzgerald led the tributes for a priest who, he
said, was held in the highest regards by all sections of the
community. He spoke of Fr. Dan’s foresightedness, kindness and
pastoral work. Town Clerk Michael Scannell thanked Fr. Dan for
his co-operation with the Council and staff on several social
projects in the town and for his advice and pastoral work in the
various communities including the Mitchel’s Regeneration Scheme.
Generous tributes were also paid by Canon Robert Warren on
behalf of the Church of Ireland, Fr. Ambrose, Prior of Holy
Cross Dominican Church, and Fr. Danny Broderick, PP, St.
Brendan’s. Fr. Sean Hanafin, Fr. Dan’s successor in St. John’s,
said he would be ‘a hard act to follow’ but looked forward to
continuing the good co-operation that exists between the parish
and Town Council.
Fr. Dan, in response, thanked the Town Council for the honour
bestowed on him which he accepted on behalf of all those
involved in pastoral ministry in the town. He praised the
Council for its work in improving the town, its appearance and
social fabric. He said many changes had taken place since he had
come to Tralee in 1996 and the Council were always there to
support and give leadership. He was leaving from Tralee to
Castleisland with a heavy heart following 12 happy years in the
county capital.
The Mayor presented Fr. Dan with a specially commissioned
charcoal drawing of the Early Christian Ratass Church, the
oldest building in Tralee, by well-known local artist Michael
O’Regan.
