Clare is new Rose of Tralee

The 52nd International Rose of Tralee is Clare Kambamettu, representing London. Clare was born in Leeds but raised in Athy, Co. Kildare having moved there with her parents when she was eight. She works as an assistant psychologist for an NHS substance misuse service in London having completed a degree in Psychology (and in History) and an MSc in Mental Health. Clare was dumbfounded when compére Daithí Ó Sé revealed her as the overall winner at the packed Festival Dome in Tralee. It is the first time in the competition’s 51 year history that the winner has come from the same centre in consecutive years. She follows in the footsteps of the popular Rose Charmaine Kenny. London had previously won the competition back in 1975 when Maureen Shannon claimed the coveted crown. Clare and the 31 other roses made their way from the Dome to the Town Centre where a crowd estimated to be in excess of 10,000 people had gathered to greet her. In her first official function as Rose of Tralee he launched the midnight madness fireworks display.
The 26-year-old is passionate about animal welfare and an active member of her local RSPCA committee, where she helps with veterinary and neutering clinics for people on low incomes as well as various fundraising events. Clare enjoys reading and going to the theatre, and will run her first half marathon this October in aid of Starlight Children’s Foundation. Clare has spent a month in Australia and also travelled through India, China and Europe. She is a member of the North Thames Assistant Psychologists Group, is a fan of Roald Dahl, and is teaching herself to play the didgeridoo so almost mastered the art of circular breathing.
She now begins a hectic year where she will travel the world representing Tralee, County Kerry and Ireland.
