Work has
commenced (Oct 8) in Tralee on the installation of a low energy
lighting scheme in the Town Centre. Tralee is
set to become the first Irish town to have LED public
lighting in a joint initiative between Tralee Town Council, ESB
and Low Energy Designs. The potential energy and CO2 savings are
expected to be in excess of 50% . The 'before and after'
situation is being monitored by the Kerry County Council's
Energy Officer Willie Moynihan and will form part of a SEI case
study on LED Public Lighting.
The ESB Contracts team under
engineer James Houlihan commenced work in the Square on
Wednesday Oct 8th and are expected to complete the installation
of the nearby Abbey Court by this weekend. Testing the
partially completed system attracted very positive comments by
passers-by on Thursday evening including local resident Gerard
Hogan who has seen many changes in the Square over the years.
The lighting fittings are being
supplied by Low Energy Designs, a UK company with strong Irish
links. Oliver Blackwell and Alan Parker of LED are in
Tralee this week supervising the installation and programming of
each individual fitting. The LED lighting scheme has many
advantages over standard incandescent lighting including the
ability to monitor and control each light remotely, either
individually or as part of a group, attach motion sensors to a
network to increase light levels with activity and ramp up the
lights as natural lighting decreases. Its biggest
attraction to local authorities is the substantially reduced energy consumption, higher light output
and cost savings.
