Blennerville Train Back in Operation

Following  three weeks work involving Tralee Town Council, FÁS, Irish Rail, Samhlaíocht Chiarraí  and the financial support of a local businessman the Tralee-Blennerville rail link re-opened on Saturday, August 1st, following a three year break and will continue operating until September.  The railway is a key link between the visitor attractions in Tralee and the Windmill Centre in Blennerville, according to windmill committee chairman Cllr. Jim Finucane.  “2009 has been difficult year tourism-wise and we hope to give Tralee a boost with the re-opening of the line. It has taken a major effort to get the line back in operation and everybody we approached was willing to help including the Railway Safety Commission who issued the operating license on July 31st.

Jim paid tribute to Fintan Foley of the Windmill Craft Shop for his efforts in securing a diesel locomotive from the West Clare Railway and a local businessman, who has asked to remained anonymous, for his sponsorship of the loco.

The train operates daily on the hour from the Aqua Dome in Tralee and half-hour from Blennerville Station, 11 am to 4.30 pm.  The journey time is approximately 15 minutes.
